Naknek, Alaska, is a historical fishing village located at the mouth of the Naknek River. Russian fur traders operated in the area long before Alaska was sold to America.
In 1821, the original Eskimo village was recorded by the Russians. The first U.S. Census was taken in 1880. In 1883, the first salmon cannery was opened. Some of the land originally owned by the Russian Orthodox Church was sold to individuals who built homes, and the village of Naknek was established.
Today, Naknek is the center for the Bristol Bay Borough Government Offices and Paug-Vik Inc., Ltd., the village corporation. Naknek's population is approximately 600. There are many large shore based fish processing operations in Naknek and across the river in South Naknek.
During the summer, the world's largest red salmon run enters Bristol Bay. The commercial salmon fishery brings an influx of fishermen, processing workers, and support services to harvest the run. Naknek becomes a bustling village of more than 6,000, who work non-stop to harvest the salmon.
Naknek has a variety of stores, restaurants, and businesses that can make your visit extremely exciting, enjoyable, and memorable.
